Safer Sidewalks are Coming to Shady Acres

New, safer sidewalks are on the way for Shady Acres, connecting neighbors to schools, transit stops, and the places that matter most. The Memorial Heights Redevelopment Authority (MHRA) has secured an $850,000 federal grant, made possible through the office of U.S. Representative Lizzie Fletcher, to improve mobility and pedestrian safety in the area.

A Grant Rooted in Community Need

A sidewalk evaluation conducted by MHRA found that sidewalks within the district’s boundaries are in poor condition, missing entirely, or did not meet current standards for width. The new funding will help close those gaps and create safer, more continuous pedestrian access throughout the district.

What the Grant Will Fund

The grant was awarded through a Community Project Funding request during fiscal year 2023-2024 and will go toward the construction of sidewalk sections that are currently missing, in poor condition, or undersized. Design, survey, environmental review, and grant management work will be funded locally by MHRA, ensuring the project moves forward on a strong foundation. MHRA will also be providing additional local funding for construction.

Connecting to Transit and Beyond

Improved sidewalks will also strengthen access to transit, as Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO) bus routes serving the area connect riders to destinations including downtown Houston and Uptown.

Project Timeline

The project team is finalizing sidewalk routes and coordinating closely with the City of Houston on design plans. Construction is set to begin in late 2027.

These improvements are expected to support mobility, and we appreciate the community’s patience and support as we work to bring these improvements to the neighborhood.
