Repairs were recently completed at the Houston Avenue and White Oak Drive parklette. The parklette was damaged when a vehicle drove onto the sidewalk and struck the brick base of the sign.
The completed project restored the neighborhood green space and included the addition of a bollard to help prevent similar incidents in the future. This protective bollard creates an added barrier between vehicles and pedestrian areas.
The upgrades were a collaborative effort of MHRA, the Greater Northside District, and Council Member Mario Castillo- District H and reflect an ongoing commitment to preserving community spaces in one of the neighborhood’s public areas.
What Is a Bollard?
A bollard is a short, vertical post typically made of steel, concrete, or other durable materials. Bollards are commonly installed in areas where there is a need to control or restrict vehicle access while still allowing pedestrian movement.
They can serve multiple purposes, including:
-
- Protecting people in pedestrian zones
- Shielding buildings, signage, and infrastructure
- Guiding traffic and defining boundaries between roadways and walkways
The bollard installed at the Woodland Heights parklette will act as a protective barrier between the roadway and pedestrian space. Its presence significantly reduces the likelihood of a vehicle encroaching onto the sidewalk or into the park area.
