We officially launched The Shepherd Durham Project on December 4, 2021 as the year came to an end. With construction set to begin this spring, the project will increase public safety and accessibility on Shepherd and Durham between I-610 N (North Loop) and I-10 (Katy Freeway). We expect that smartly designed infrastructure will make for a better commute and a safer roadway.
Increased Safety at Shepherd and Durham
A 2.5-mile stretch encompassing Shepherd, Durham, and other cross streets will see responsible construction efforts to remedy unsafe commuting conditions. Builders will add turning lanes, bike lanes, pedestrian areas, and lights to the roadway. These additions are set to transform daily travel and make these major streets safer and easier to navigate.
Car and bike travelers aren’t the only ones who will have a safer commute. Transit stops and shelters will be relocated to the far side of intersections. New shelters will be installed for high-frequency bus stops in coordination with Houston METRO. To prepare for unexpected events we are upgrading stormwater infrastructure to meet post-Hurricane Harvey standards. Improvements will also include upgrades to sanitary and water lines.
Accessibility for All at Shepherd and Durham
Accessibility transformations will facilitate more connections across the entire neighborhood surrounding Shepherd and Durham. A key feature is wider, ADA-accessible sidewalks that make it easier and more comfortable to travel by foot. Pedestrian ramps, crossings, and high-comfort bicycle facilities will produce a similar effect.
Whether you prefer to walk, bike, or drive around, roadway improvements will create a more vibrant and relaxed environment. Plus, local businesses will find more customers are visiting their establishments since it will be easier to get to them.
