Shepherd Durham Improvements: Top Ways to Stay in the Know

At Memorial Heights Redevelopment Authority (MHRA), we take great pride in our community and are dedicated to providing accurate information to business owners, residents, and visitors. We understand that keeping you informed about construction updates is essential, and today, we’re sharing top ways to stay in the know.

Attend Pre-Construction Meetings

One of the primary ways we keep you informed about upcoming projects is through our pre-construction meetings. These gatherings are valuable opportunities for business owners and residents to learn more about the projects shaping our community. For major projects, a pre-construction meeting is held for the community prior to construction starting. These meetings are held virtually, in person, or both.  We invite those in the area to attend the meetings by sending a meeting notification to the property owner’s registered address, posting information about the meeting on our website, announcing it on our social media sites, and including the notice in our regular online mailer.

At the meeting, our team provides details about the project and explains upcoming changes. The expected timeline for the project will also be provided, keeping in mind that timelines are subject to change due to weather. Additionally, delays can be caused by unexpected barriers found beneath the surface, such as gas lines. By joining us at these meetings, you’ll have the chance to understand what is likely to happen,  ask questions, and share your thoughts and concerns. It’s extremely important that attendees sign up for updates at the meeting to ensure they never miss any pertinent information.

Be on the Lookout for Utility Notices

While the City of Houston and the utility companies determine when the majority of water and gas interruptions will take place, we do our best to ensure residents and business owners are made aware in advance when interruptions stem from our work. Our team personally goes door-to-door to provide advance notices to those impacted. If no one is available to answer the door, we leave a note that provides important details about the upcoming interruption and how to stay informed. Additionally, we post notices on our social media channels, and for extended interruptions, we also alert the local news. Be sure to follow us on  Facebook and X (Twitter)  and pay attention to notices and news alerts.

Driveway reconstruction is handled very similarly to utility interruptions. In most instances, the contractor will go door to door to let residents know that their driveway will be re-constructed when the work will start, how long it will take, and when it will be re-opened for their use. Our team goes to great lengths to minimize impacts to residents and businesses. While the work needs to be completed, and when possible, we try to accommodate requests from residents and business owners regarding start dates. If we are unable to make contact with residents after multiple attempts, a notice will be left on the door.

For commercial/business driveways, the same communication is performed with the various business owners that utilize the driveway(s). When possible, driveways are constructed one at a time to allow vehicles to use other available driveways and maintain access to businesses.
